The VEEP Approach(continued)

Energy Literacy

ENERGY LITERACY
IS VEEP’S MISSION

We use the term Energy Literacy to mean a clear understanding of our energy resources, and how to use them efficiently to make energy-usage choices that support a vital economy and a healthy environment.

Energy Comic

AN ENERGY LITERATE
PERSON KNOWS:

  • What our energy resources are and how we utilize them
  • The many ways electricity is made and the advantages and disadvantages of each
  • Why it is important to use energy wisely and how to do so
  • How government policy effects our energy choices

AN ENERGY LITERATE
PERSON CHOOSES:

  • To use energy wisely, recognizing the impact of their choice on climate change, our environment and our economy
  • To share their knowledge and inspire action and learning in others

THE ENERGY LITERACY GAP

Our national deficit in Energy Literacy may be one of the most fundamental roadblocks to progress on the issues of climate change and energy sustainability. Only 12% of Americans understand how energy is generated and less than half understand that cars and appliances contribute to climate change, according to the recent National Environmental Education Foundation. Even now, when there is as much focus as there has ever been on being “green,” 88% of Americans don't have the core knowledge to understand the implications of their energy choices. No wonder efforts to change attitudes towards energy consumption, efficiency, and renewable energy technologies struggle to make headway.

In Vermont, the most recent NECAP survey of student performance in science shows that only 52% of 4th-graders meet state benchmarks for science proficiency. That number drops by almost half, to 27% by the time students reach 11th grade. Without the language of science, it is very difficult to understand energy.

We can change this in Vermont, and VEEP has begun this work in our schools. We have worked diligently over the last twenty years to deliver core energy literacy concepts in a science-based, engaging and productive format to students of all ages. We bring these activities to learners of all ages, in support of Energy Literacy. Students who understand energy and how it works will make more informed choices about energy use, and inspire others to do the same.
